Are retainers necessary and how long will I have to wear one?

There are two types of retainers a fixed retainer or a removable retainer.  A retainer is a device worn full or part-time after braces have been removed. The retainer is designed to prevent your teeth from drifting or moving while the bone around your teeth hardens and stabilizes.

The longer you wear your retainer, the better your chances that your teeth stay straight. Retainers provide assurance that your teeth will stay in perfect alignment while your jaw continues to grow or develop.

Will I still be able to play sports?

Yes. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. If you play sport and would like a mouth guard please let us know and we will organise one for you.

Will braces hurt?

In general, most patients will experience some form of discomfort the first week after their braces are put on, and in some cases right after the braces are tightened. A mild analgesic such as Nurofen or Panadol is recommended to ease the discomfort.  We would advise that you consult with your general practitioner or pharmacist before taking medications.

How do Braces Straighten Your Teeth?

Teeth are able to move when a light continuous pressure is placed on them. Surrounding the root of every tooth is a ligament (periodontal ligament). Pressure and tension on this ligament from the braces results in bony changes around the tooth root. These bony changes known as resorption and apposition result in tooth movement.

Your orthodontist can place very precise pressure on your teeth with the braces. This allows us to provide you with a perfect smile.

Do Braces Harm Your Teeth or Gums?

Patients with braces do need to clean their teeth carefully and thoroughly with daily tooth brushing and flossing. It is also important to avoid foods that are high in sugar as well as soft drinks, sports drinks and acidic fruit juices. We also recommend that patients see their general dentist for a check-up and professional clean every 6 months during their orthodontic treatment.

If patients look after their teeth and gums well, no significant harm will result from the braces.
